Flavius Honorius, was the younger son of Theodosius Ist, and was born in 384. On the death of his father, Honorius succeeded to the sovereignty of the West, while his elder brother Arcadius had received the East. During his minority, the government was entirely in the hands of Stilicho who defended Italy against the attacks of the Visigoths under Alaric (402,403). Alaric invaded Italy and took Rome in 410, after Honorius had put to death Stilicho, on a charge of treason. Honorius meantime lived an inglorious life at Ravenna, where he continued to reside till his death in 423.
