M. Antonius Gordianus, born about A.D 157 was proconsul in Africa under the reign of Maximinus Ist. When, in A.D. 238, a rebellion broke out in the province against the tyranny of the emperor, Gordian was petitioned to accept the purple, and, although in his 81st year, he agreed. He associated his son Gordian II with him as joint ruler, and a deputation was sent to Rome to ask for the confirmation of the Senate but before the deputies could return to Africa both Gordians had perished. When the news of his son's death reached him, Gordian commited suicide after a short reign of 21 days.
