www.thehistoryexplorer.com In the north of England, ongoing archaeological discoveries are revealing more of the history, battle strategies and lifestyles of the Roman army and their conquest and settlement of Britain. Over decades of occupation, several garrisons were constructed here, built one on top of another. Sifting through the layers of the fort ruins, excavators have made some extraordinary finds, from coins in mint condition to pens and writing sets. Most fascinating of all, thousands of documents have been recovered, including letters to home written by the Roman soldiers stationed at the Vindolanda garrison. They are an incredible find and are shedding new light on the age of Roman occupation in Britain.
